The military repertoire of puppet theatres in Northern France, 1870-1914

Despite its richness and the relevance of the questions it raises, the military repertoire for puppets is the subject of very few studies, none of which examines the French repertoire before 1914.
Our research project will focus on the military repertoire of the puppet theatres of Northern France from the beginning of the Third Republic to the eve of the First World War, basing on two corpuses. The first one deals with the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871 (such as L'Espion Heygof, a play by Maurice Richard performed at the Théât' Louis in Roubaix, or L'Bataille éd Quérriu, a play in Picard by the poet Edouard David, intended for the Théâtre "Chés Cabotans" in Amiens). It will allow us to analyse the representation of the war, of the soldiers and of the civilian population by the puppets. The second corpus gathers plays dealing with colonial wars (for example, Louis Richard's La Prise d'Alger or Maurice Richard's La Bataille de Kimberley devoted to the Boer War). It will help to refine hypotheses on the modalities of representation of war and more particularly of the enemy, notably in colonial contexts.
If we examine the way in which certain regional puppet theatres have approached the theme of war, we notice that the choice of this subject has served their ambition to go beyond the narrow framework of the traditional repertoire to stage national and international events. Therefore, beyond the examination of the representations of war in puppet theatres, our objective is to open a reflection on the role of puppets in the construction of regional and national identities.
